Types of audiences

Mass audience
A group consisting of males and female of all ages and social groups is called the mainstream/mass audience. By carefully considering the way a film trailer is constructed such as the conventions and characters used, it is a way to create a mass audiences and maximise the potential for the films success.

Niche audience
Some trailers/films are created with a specific audience in mind- this audience is called a niche audience. Even though the text will have a smaller number than a text with a mass audience, they may still make the same amount of profit as this can be appealing to people.

Target audience vs Actual audience
Film producers have a specific audience in mind when producing the film but those who are targeted aren't necessarily the only ones who will access the film and watch it. The way the text is constructed, for example the conventions and characters used determines the target audience. However, for example, the BBFC certificate for a particular horror film may be an 18 as it includes the typical conventions for this age such as gore and sexual scenes, but people who are younger than 18 may watch the film at home so these people are the actual audience.

Our audience- Men and women ages 15-25
Our film/trailer will be aimed at a niche audience as horror isn't a very popular genre because of the effects it can have on an audience. However, my group and I will stick to the appropriate conventions for a BBFC of 15, but this doesn't necessarily mean this age group will watch it. I learnt that our actual audience may be younger and older people as well. This is because, our target audience may watch it with parents who are much older than this target audience at cinemas or on DVD. Also, some children or older adults may have seen the film advertised on the film poster and magazine cover so are aware of it and will watch it as they think it looks good.
