As I have already looked at conventions when analysing other existing products, I have put together this mood board of existing psychological film posters to look specifically at colour, font and layout of images and text to help me when I come to design my own.
From creating this mood board, I have noticed that they all use low key lighting and dark colours such as blues and black for the main image with a contrasting text colour such as white or red to connotate danger and show the films genre. These colours are used together so the the image doesn't distract your eye away from the important text information such as the film name and tag line which are there to persuade you to watch the trailer and film as they give hints to what the film may be about.
I also noticed that the film names don't have a specific layout; quite a few of the film posters have the name positioned at the bottom as this will be the last thing the audience see so they don't forget it. However, the rest of the posters have the names in random places such as 'The Others' poster which has the film name positioned to the left of the character nearer the bottom so it doesn't cover the dark lighting at the top as this shows the darkness in the film to create enigma for the audience which also persuades them to watch the trailer and film. Therefore, layout does need to be carefully considered to ensure I create the right mood I want my audience to feel like 'The Others' poster.
Furthermore, the dominant images tend to be close ups or extreme close ups of a characters face, usually a shocked or upset face to show the characters fear, such as 'The Child' and 'Shattered'. This also shows the genre of the film and persuades the audience to watch it as they will want to find out what the characters role is and why they are showing that particular emotion. I particularly like the 'Remember Who to Trust' film poster at the top right as there is a dominant image of 3 characters which come across to the audience as the main characters. I like it as it is a unique and memorable layout as it is completely different to the other film posters as they have single image in the centre of the poster. From this, I need to ensure I use an original photo in a unique format such as layering different photos up to make sure the audience remember the poster so they remember the film and create word of mouth.
Now I have looked at this mood board, the text used for the the 'Patrick' film poster has inspired me to consider taking hallucination elements and creating a font which represents this to the audience to give them hints about what is to come in the film to persuade them to watch it and create enigma.
I also like the effect used on the 'Session 9' film poster as the smudged blood coming from the 9 foreshadows death and violence in the film. This is something I want to consider using on my own film poster as it looks as though it has been 'stuck on' so looks unique. I could consider doing something similar such as placing pills dropping down from a letter.
