Idea updated

15/10/15

Last lesson today, my group and I discussed our focus group feedback to develop our idea:

Film name
Transfixed

Narrative
A young couple, Maddie and Elliot, inherit a house after Maddie's parents are tragically killed in a car crash. Dishonesty and murder stand to pull her into depth of despair. Taunted by the dead, betrayed by those she loves, blood and murder stand a chance to send her insane.

Trailer idea in narrative order

  • Equilibrium- A young couple happy together in their new home
  • Hint of disruptionElliot cheats on Maddie with Delaney and Delaney is sending threats and taunting messages to Maddie which send her insane
  • Disruption- Delaney is outside the house covered in blood and soon after there is a home invasion where Maddie is attacked
  • Restoration of disruption- Maddie has been taking pills throughout  to cope with her depression which has concluded from her parents death, her paranoia and stress. At this point she ends up overdosing which caused her to collapse. She begins to dream/have nightmares and sees her boyfriend missing. She also sees herself having interviews with the police to find out where he is but she then sees him in a vulnerable state where he is shown being faced by someone with a weapon.
  • New equilibrium- Maddie wakes up everything is blurred, however she sees the antagonists from the home invasion surrounding her home...

Conventions
  • I want to use a shot of someone with a weapon which looks like they are about to kill Elliot. However, we won't show their face or what happens as this will make the audience want to watch the film to find out.
  • Focuses on the fears of the characters to build up tension by showing close ups of Maddie's and the antagonists facial expressions
  • Left the trailer on a cliff hanger to intrigue the audience
  • Plot is focused on everyday life- young couple in their new home
  • Synchronous sound for weapons
  • Plays on the audiences emotions to create fear
  • Location for a home invasion- a home to make it realistic and create a sense of discomfort for the audience
  • Shadows from low key and artificial lighting
  • Challenged antagonist conventions by using a female character
  • Threats
  • Blood
  • Weapons
Character representations
  • Female protagonist will be portrayed as a damsel in distress and vulnerable however at the same time she will be represented as sexy through shots of her body to show the male gaze theory.
  • We are challenging stereotypes by having a female antagonist. Women are stereotypically represented as weak and fragile however, our female antagonist is going to be represented as having male traits by being strong and aggressive.

Drugs- as our BBFC is a 15, it states that dugs shouldn't be shown, however, as we are not encouraging the misuse of them, we can still use them.

Theories
  • Levi strauss theory - Good vs Evil
  • Final Girl theory
  • Roland Barthes theory of enigma codes
  • Male Gaze theory
